Misenheimer, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2024) -- The Pfeiffer University volleyball team returned home to Merner Gym on Saturday, falling in a pair of tight 3-2 matches, falling to N.C. Wesleyan and Averett University.
Against NCWU, the Falcons dropped the match in five sets (15-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17, 6-15).
The Falcons attack was paced by Abby Lewis, who finished with 11 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .25, and by Haedyn McGrath, who had 11 while hitting .276. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Gabby Edwards had 16 and Karmen Rion had 10. From the front row, Madison Tate contributed five blocks.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Falcons fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-15. Pfeiffer trailed by as many as 10 points as North Carolina Wesleyan never surrendered the lead in a set that was tied up zero times before the Battling Bishops took control.
SET 2 | Pfeiffer evened the match at 1-1 after a 26-24 set-two win. The Falcons rallied after being down as many as eight points at 18-10 to win the set. Pfeiffer grabbed the lead at 25-24 and hung on for the victory, totaling 17 kills .
SET 3 | North Carolina Wesleyan took a 2-1 match lead after defeating the Falcons in set three. The Falcons lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-19.
SET 4 | Pfeiffer then responded to secure set four 25-17 to force a fifth set. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Pfeiffer finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, eight points, to finish off the set. Pfeiffer got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four North Carolina Wesleyan attacks in the stanza.
SET 5 | Pfeiffer came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth sets, but dropping the first, third and fifth, which they dropped by the score of 15-6, to fall in the match. The Falcons fell behind on the first point and never took the lead.
In the second match of the afternoon, Pfeiffer fell in five sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 10-15) in a nonconference match to the Averett Cougars.
The non-conference loss dropped Pfeiffer to 3-10 on the season.
Abby Lewis finished with 14 kills on the day to lead the Falcons attack. Defensively, had five players reach double figures in digs, highlighted by Gabby Edwards' 23, 16 from Gabi Gama, and 15 more from Kylee Mayberry. From the front row, Madison Tate contributed six blocks.

SET 1 | The Falcons opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-22. Pfeiffer grabbed the advantage for good at 23-22 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Falcons took over in the second half of the stanza. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Averett attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | Pfeiffer then lost set two 25-22, evening the match at a set apiece. The Falcons trailed by as many as six points as Averett grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was tied up three times before the Cougars took over the lead.
SET 3 | Pfeiffer then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Falcons took the set 25-16 powered by a strong performance on the attacking end. Pfeiffer put together a .308 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. The Falcons ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.
SET 4 | Pfeiffer couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Cougars forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory. The Falcons fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before falling in the set.
SET 5 | Pfeiffer and Averett went back and forth all game, trading wins in the first three sets until the Cougars took the final two sets, including winning the fifth set 15-10, and the match. The Falcons had a lead early in the set at 6-5 before Averett took over.

Pfeiffer will hit the road for a USA South match with Methodist University on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Fayetteville, N.C. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
