BUENA VISTA, Va. (Jan. 10, 2025) --The Pfeiffer men's basketball team fell to the Southern Virginia Knights 98-95 on the road Friday on D.J. Green's buzzer-beating 3-pointer in overtime..
The Falcons (5-5, 1-1) had six players score in double figures, led by Justin Gaten, who had 20 points. Daymon Beckwith tacked on 19 points and six steals from the bench and Doug Smith helped out with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Pfeiffer offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in nine threes on 24 attempts. Gaten was the most prolific shooter for the Falcons, draining three treys in the contest.
Pfeiffer forced 16 Southern Virginia turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Friday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Beckwith's six steals led the way for Pfeiffer.
How It Happened
After playing to a 33-33 tie, Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run with 4:35 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Alex Cunningham, to take a 39-33 lead. The Falcons then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 44-38 advantage. Pfeiffer got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 22 of its 44 total points.
Southern Virginia proceeded to take a 71-70 lead before Pfeiffer went on an 8-0 run to seize a 78-71 lead with 4:56 to go in the contest. The Knights then fought back to even things up at 87-87 and send the game to overtime. Pfeiffer took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 43 points in the lane.
Southern Virginia then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Pfeiffer behind 98-95 at the final buzzer.
