KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2025)--The Pfeiffer Falcons took a 9-5 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on and fell 17-9 to the Berry Vikings Saturdayat the D3 Showcase at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, N.C.
Sophomore Dylan Dula (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (0-5) and absorbed the loss.
At the plate, the Falcons were paced by junior Connor Welker, who went 4-for-5 on the day with two doubles and two RBI. Senior C.J. Acosta put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Freshman Levi Barrett also contributed for Pfeiffer, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Falcons first put runs on the board in the first inning. Pfeiffer got an RBI single from Welker, scoring Acosta from third base.
The Falcons kept the Vikings off the board before taking the lead in the second. Pfeiffer scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Acosta, which brought the Falcons lead to 4-2.
Berry narrowed Pfeiffer's lead to 4-3 before the Falcons stretched the advantage to 7-3 in the third inning. The Falcons picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Acosta.
Pfeiffer held the Vikings scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Falcons added two runs off of Berry pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double from Welker, bringing the score to 9-3 in favor of Pfeiffer. The Falcons were unable to hold the lead, as Berry scored 14 times over the remaining five innings to grab the 17-9 win.
