MISENHEIMER, N.C. (April 12, 2025) -- Visiting Mary Baldwin University scored twice in the ninth inning to take a 5-3 win in the USA South series opener at Joe Ferebee Field on Saturday afternoon.
Though they had plenty of opportunities, Pfeiffer had a hard time cashing them in, leaving 11 Falcons on base in a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels on Saturday.
James Eason (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Pfeiffer (9-20, 5-8). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
Offensively, the Falcons were paced by Badin Gusa, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Hunter Huneycutt put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and a walk. Joe Javier also contributed for Pfeiffer, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Gusa put Pfeiffer on the board with a two-out solo home run off sophomore Cody Hoffer.
The Fighting Squirrels then tied the ballgame at one before the Falcons came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Pfeiffer scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Javier, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Falcons.
Pfeiffer's lead had evaporated once the eighth inning came around and turned into a 3-2 Mary Baldwin advantage, when the Falcons evened up the game at three. Mary Baldwin then scored two times over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 5-3 win.
