Pfeiffer Baseball Splits DH With WPU, Advances to USA South Tournament

GAME 1 | Pfeiffer 8, William Peace 3

MISENHEIMER, N.C. --Pfeiffer University used the long-ball to down visiting William Peace University, 8-3 in game one of Sunday doubleheader at Joe Ferebee Field.  The win proved to be the series winner over WPU, which clinched the Falcons a spot in the upcoming USA South Tournament.  The loss eliminated the Pacers' postseason aspirations.

Sophomore pitcher Ivan Delp (1-3) got the win out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (14-23, 8-12). The right-hander went three shutout innings, giving up one hit, no walks while striking out three. Senior Josh Little started the game and went six innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on six hits, walking none and striking out seven.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by senior C.J. Acosta, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Sophomore Hunter Huneycutt furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Hayden Furr also chipped in for Pfeiffer, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Huneycutt put Pfeiffer on the board with a leadoff home run off senior Jack McIntosh.

The Falcons lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 3-1. Pfeiffer scored twice on Acosta's two-run homer, which brought the score level at 3-3.

That 3-3 tie turned into an 8-3 Pfeiffer lead in the seventh. The Falcons bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Acosta. The score remained 8-3 for the rest of the game, as Pfeiffer coasted to the win.

GAME 2 | William Peace 23, Pfeiffer 9
In game two, four Pfeiffer players recorded at least two hits, but the Falcons fell to the William Peace Pacers 23-9 Sunday.

Senior Chris Loreto (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Pfeiffer (14-24, 9-12). Sophomore Cayman Buck was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Pfeiffer got an RBI single from Badin Gusa, scoring senior Jiwon Yun from second base.

The Falcons lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 11-1. Pfeiffer got back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Yun and Gusa to pick up a couple of runs, which tightened the Pacers lead to 11-3.

Pfeiffer held the Pacers off the board before narrowing the gap to 11-4 in the fourth. The Falcons scored once on an RBI single off the bat of .

The Pacers expanded their lead to 18-4 before the Pfeiffer offense got back in action, cutting into that lead in the sixth. The Falcons scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ashton Shoaf, tightening the William Peace lead to 18-9. The Falcons were unable to get any closer, as William Peace added five runs to their tally on the way to a 23-9 final.

The Falcons will take the No. 6 seed into the upcoming USA South Tournament and will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on third-seeded Brevard College on Thursday, May 1.  Game times will be released by the USA South as they are confirmed with the participating teams and Greensboro College, which will serve as host.
