MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2026) — Pfeiffer University pulled out a thrilling 73-69 overtime win over Mary Baldwin on Saturday in USA South men's basketball action at Merner Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (6-8, 2-2 USA South) rallied after surrendering a late lead in regulation, outscoring the Fighting Squirrels 10-6 in the extra period.
Doug Smith powered Pfeiffer with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks, including a go-ahead jumper in overtime.
Justin Gaten added 18 points and hit two clutch free throws with 13 seconds left, while
Sean Sucarichi sealed the win with a dunk with 0.4 seconds remaining.
Pfeiffer shot 45.8% from the field and converted 13 of 22 free throws. The Falcons dominated inside with 40 points in the paint and nine blocks, while forcing 16 turnovers.
Mary Baldwin (7-5, 2-2) erased a 10-point second-half deficit and tied the game at 63 on Raymond Benton's layup with six seconds left. Rony Hogarth led all scorers with 23 points and eight rebounds, and Marquis Dunklin chipped in 14 points.
Pfeiffer led 29-21 at halftime, but the teams traded runs in a second half that featured eight ties. The Falcons' bench contributed 13 points, and their defense held Mary Baldwin to 2-for-8 shooting in overtime.
The Falcons will continue USA South play with a road trip to Brevard College on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tipoff from Boshamer Gym is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
