MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Jan.8, 2026) — Pfeiffer University made a spirited push in the final quarter but couldn't overcome early miscues, falling 80-70 to nationally-ranked Christopher Newport on Thursday in a non-conference women's basketball game at Merner Gym.
The Falcons (7-5) trailed by 15 entering the fourth quarter yet outscored the Captains 22-17 in the final frame, fueled by
Ava Hairston's relentless play. Hairston finished with 16 points, seven assists, and three steals, sparking a transition attack that produced 27 fast-break points.
Lettie Michael led Pfeiffer with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while
Kaileigh Gunter added 14 points.
Pfeiffer shot 41% from the field (25 of 61) and converted 16 of 26 free throws, but 29 turnovers proved costly against a Christopher Newport squad that turned those mistakes into 27 points.
Despite the loss, Pfeiffer showed resilience. After trailing by double digits most of the night, the Falcons cut the deficit to nine with under two minutes remaining on a Hairston layup.
Nyree Bell chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, and the defense forced 28 turnovers while recording 15 steals.
Christopher Newport (14-3) controlled the glass with a 55-35 rebounding advantage and dominated inside with 40 points in the paint. Madison McKenzie paced the Captains with 15 points, while Jessica Dornak added 13.
Pfeiffer returns to USA South play on Saturday, Jan.10 when they host Mary Baldwin at 2:00 p.m. in Merner Gym in the first game of a USA South doubleheader.
