MISENHEIMER, N.C. - For the second consecutive match, a freshman tallied a crucial late goal for his first career score as Johnny Sanchez's goal in the 83rd minute led the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (5-3) to a 2-0 victory over Catawba (2-7). The victory improves the Falcons winning streak to four matches.ÂÂ
Sanchez broke the scoreless draw with 7:01 left on the clock off a corner kick. Niko Andrade lofted the corner into the box that the Catawba defense cleared. However, Sanchez was "Johnny on the spot" as he controlled the loose ball and sent a laser into the top left corner of the goal. Catawba couldn't stop the bleeding as the Indians allowed a Roberto Soares' strike less than six minutes later off an assist from Nathan Regis.
Neither team was able to mount much of an offensive attack through the majority of the match before the Falcons broke through late. Pfeiffer held a 13-9 advantage in shots on the afternoon and took an 11-5 lead in corner kicks.
Nicolas Dulac made six saves for the Falcons in the win, improving to 5-3 on the season. Dulac and the Falcons recorded their third clean sheet in the last four matches.
In Pfeiffer's last match, it was freshman Marshall Hodge who scored his first career goal as he evened the critical battle with Lees-McRae at two in the 83rd minute before the Falcons eventually took the 3-2 victory.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Erskine at 4 p.m.
