MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Pfeiffer women's basketball team (5-7, 4-4 CC) avenged an opening day loss to Mount Olive (4-10, 2-6 CC) with a 68-59 victory on Saturday afternoon. Meg Pritchard led the way for the Falcons scoring a game-high 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting and Carlisha Holivay tied a career-high with 16 points.
Ty Wallace led Mount Olive, notching a double-double with 13 boards and 11 points. Arieal Johnson and Anamaria Zjacic also scored in double figures with Johnson scoring 11 and Zjacic adding 10 points.
Pfeiffer shot 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line, including a 12-for-15 mark in the second half. The Falcons had 18 second chance points compared to only seven for the Trojans.
The Falcons dominated the paint scoring 36 points in the lane and were able to overcome being outscored by UMO's bench 22-2.
Carter Williams' three pointer at the end of first half gave Pfeiffer a 33-30 lead heading into the break. Pfeiffer extended the lead to seven at the 10:35 mark of the second half before Wallace went 1-for-2 from the line for the Trojans. Pfeiffer responded with a 9-2 run to push the lead to 56-42.The Falcons maintained a double digit lead for the majority of the last seven minutes of the game.
Holivay added eight rebounds and Pritchard recorded seven boards. Holivay tied her previous career high point total which was set on Nov. 12, 2013 at Catawba.
Alexis Stallard added 12 points and Williams finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Pfeiffer's starters combined to play 179 of a possible 200 minutes as the Falcons shortened the bench for the conference battle.
The win is Pfeiffer's second in a row as the Falcons now sit at .500 in league play.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 13 when Pfeiffer travels to Barton for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
