MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Andrew Guerrero poured in a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (2-1) to a 73-68 win in its home opener over Brevard (0-3) on Tuesday evening. With the win, Pfeiffer avenges last year's 69-67 loss to the Tornados at Brevard.
"Tonight was a really good win four our team," said head coach Jeremy Currier. "Brevard is a well coached team that really challenged our defense. I thought Mackly Bien-Aime played extremely hard and made game-winning plays on both ends of the court. De'Vonte has been great for us and Andrew has worked so hard on his game; it's great to see his effort pay off."
Bien-Aime provided a spark off the Pfeiffer bench, scoring 14 points and coming one rebound shy of a double-double. Bien-Aime went 10-for-14 from the charity stripe, including two to seal the game with four seconds remaining.
De'Vonte Jenkins finished the contest with nine points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Guerrero went 6-for-9 from long range and had 16 of his 22 points in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Alex Moe led Brevard with 17 points and seven rebounds. Miles Leathers added 14 points and eight boards.
The Falcons aggressive defense forced the Tornados into 24 turnovers on the night. Mike Smith added four steals and Bien-Aime tallied three thefts and two blocked shots.
Due to the turnover discrepancy, Pfeiffer was able to take 18 more shots than their opponents. The Falcons shot just 39.1 percent from the floor but held off a late Brevard rally to secure the win. Pfeiffer led by 14 with 5:35 remaining but the Tornados clawed back into the contest with a 14-2 run that cut the Falcon lead to 68-66 with 30 seconds remaining. Senior AJ Clark was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to put Pfeiffer up four. Brevard answered with a layup with 18 seconds left and then sent sophomore Josh Calhoun to the line for two shots. Calhoun hit 1-of-2 to give the Falcons a 71-68 lead and DeMarcus Threatt's three point attempt with eight seconds left was no good, setting the stage for Bien-Aime's clinching free throws.
The Falcons hit the road for five straight road games starting on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Mars Hill for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
