Falcons Split Two In Newberry Tournament

NEWBERRY, SC - The Pfeiffer Falcons (1-1) split their  first games of the 2016 with a 15-0 win in five innings versus the Clafin Panthers (0-2) and a loss to the Newberry Wolves (2-0) 5-2 in the Newberry Tournament on Saturday.

In game one, Pfeiffer erupted for 13 runs in the second inning as Chandler Walker started it off with a single to right, followed by a Bailey Sherrill walk. Next batter Anna Lauren Brafford homered to left field for the two run home run.

After a Callie Kuykendall walk,  Emma Tuttle was hit by the pitch and Rachel Crowder singled to centerfield bringing up Kaleigh Troutman. Troutman singled in Kuykendall and Tuttle taking the Pfeiffer lead to 6-0.

With her second at-bat of the bottom of the second inning, Vada Blue Sherrill doubled in three runs with two outs, scoring Kuykendall , Brafford and Bailey Sherrill pushing the lead to 11-0.  

Pfeiffer added two more runs in the game to take a 15-0 advantage to put away Clafin after five innings.

The Falcons used three pitchers for a complete shutout in the five inning victory as Sam Jarmusch recorded her first win of the season as she pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.

In game two versus Newberry, the Falcons jumped out to one run lead after the top of the first as second batter Tuttle walked. Tuttle advanced to second base as Crowder lined a pitch down the right field line. Next batter, Troutman reached on a fielder's choice as Crowder was forced out at second, but Tuttle scored all the way from second base on the play.

Newberry tied up the game in the bottom of the second when Allison Van Atta homered to left field off of Pfeiffer starter Kennedy Lester.

Newberry added two more runs for a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third as the Nicollete Myers singled to centerfield and the next better Christina Linton as Myers advanced to second. The following batter Nataile Willis doubled in Myers and Linton.

In the top of the fifth inning, leadoff batter Vada Blue Sherrill was hit by a pitch and stole second. The next batter, Tuttle grounded out to the first baseman to that moved Sherril to third base. After Crowder grounded out, Troutman drove the ball to centerfield, scoring Sherrill cutting the Wolves lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Christina Linton singled,  Natalie Willis reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Linton to third base. Mallory Gerndt singled in Linton as it also advanced Willis to third base.

After a pitching change for Pfeiffer, Jeri Loffler flied out to center, scoring Willis on a sacrifice fly.

Newberry held Pfeiffer scoreless the last two innings for the 5-2 win.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Sunday as they play Newberry at 11 a.m. and Clafin at 1 p.m.
