No. 2 Falcons Split With North Greenville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The No. 2 Pfeiffer softball team (36-4, 14-2 CC) earned a split with North Greenville (27-17, 13-5 CC) on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons saw their eight game winning streak come to a close in game, dropping a 7-0 decision before rallying for a 6-3 win in game two.

North Greenville's Amanda Coffrin was the star in game one, tossing a complete game shutout and allowing only two hits. Coffrin struck out five and improved to 15-8 in the circle on the year.

The game was scoreless for the first four innings until the Crusaders erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth, capped by a two run bomb from Megan Johnson. Morgan Roach added a two run shot in the sixth as the Crusaders stunned the host Falcons.

Kiana Millsaps suffered her first loss of the season, dropping to 6-1 after allowing two runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

Coffrin threw 104 pitches with 62 going for strikes. Makenzie Pennell and Taylor Jerome were the only batters to record hits for Pfeiffer, both with singles.

In game two, the upset-minded Crusaders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the top of the third but the Falcons would rally. Pfeiffer scored twice in the bottom of the third and added four more in the bottom of the fourth to come away with the 6-3 victory.

Millsaps went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and Pennell was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Stephanie Fortner drew a pair of walks and earned four free passes in the double header bringing her season total to 33.

Freshman Caitlin Christian improved to 10-2 as she threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief. The lefty allowed one hit and one walk while striking out a pair of batters.

The game one loss puts a significant dent in Pfeiffer's hopes of winning a regular season Conference Carolinas title. Limestone sits atop the standings with only one league loss and six league games left to play. Both Limestone and Pfeiffer have to travel to fourth place King for a doubleheader.

The Falcons return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Erksine for a 2 p.m. game. Pfeiffer swept the Flying Fleet a season ago, winning a pair of one run games.
