William Peace Nets Late Goal to Sink Pfeiffer Men, 2-1

Misenheimer, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2019)
 – William Peace University used two goals from sophomore Ivan Ponce to down Pfeiffer University in a USA South men's soccer match at Lefko Field on Sunday afternoon.

After battling to a scoreless first half, William Peace broke through at the 54:26 mark when Ponce received a cross and buried it for the 1-0 lead.

That cushion was short-lived as the Falcons' Diego Moran (Flushing, N.Y.) was fouled inside the Pacer box at 57:49.  His subsequent penalty kick knotted the match at 1-1.  The tally from Moran marked his third goal of the season.

The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way until the 86th minute, when Ponce found a loose ball at the middle of the box and fired it past Falcon goalkeeper David Chavarria (Franklinville, N.C.) for what would be the eventual game-winner.

Pfeiffer would not be able to must a shot in the final minutes of the match, falling by the 2-1 score.

WPU outshot the Falcons 19-10, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half.  Pfeiffer had more corner kick opportunities, leading that category by a 7-4 margin.

Pfeiffer's Chavarria made six saves on the afternoon while WPU's Dillon Garbrandt made three saves in the win.

WPU improves to 8-5-2 overall and 6-4-1 in league play while Pfeiffer dips to 6-9 overall and 4-7 in USA South play.

Pfeiffer will hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 23 for their final road contest of the year, travelling to Danville, Va. to take on Averett University in a 6:00 p.m. matchup with the Cougars.
