Falcons Hit Five Home Runs in Split at Guilford

Greensboro, N.C.  (April 12, 2019) –The Pfeiffer University softball team launched five home runs, three from Kiana Millsaps and two from Vada Blue Sherrill, splitting a doubleheader at Guilford College.  Pfeiffer won the first game 13-2 and dropped game two 12-11 in eight innings.

THE BASICS
In game one Pfeiffer started with a bang, scoring four runs in the first inning.  Vada Blue Sherrill leadoff with a home run to left field followed by a three-run blast from Kari Westerbeek.

Guilford made it 4-2 in the bottom of the first then after two scoreless inning, Pfeiffer push five across in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single from Makenzie Pennell and a two-run blast from Kiana Millsaps. Kayla Miller accounted for the first run of the inning.

The Falcons plated four more runs in the fifth to make it 13-2.  In the fifth, Pennell had an RBI single and Millsaps delivered her second homer of the day, this time a three-run shot to center field.

Millsaps also earned the pitching win in game one, retiring the Quakers in order in the fifth, running her season record to 23-4 in the circle.

In game two, both teams managed a pair of runs in the first inning, with the Falcon runs coming on another leadoff blast from Sherrill followed by an RBI single from Sara Brown.

Pfeiffer got two more runs in the second inning on an RBI double from Sherrill.  She would also score on a sacrifice fly from Pennell to go up 4-2.

Guilford touched the Falcons for four runs in the third inning to take the 6-4 lead, but Pfeiffer got two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to reclaim the 8-6 advantage.  In the fourth, Millsaps had an RBI single followed by a sacrifice from Westerbeek.  In the fifth, the Falcon runs came via Brown sacrifice fly and a Pennell RBI single.

Guilford gained the 9-8 advantage with three runs in the sixth, but that was short-lived as Pfeiffer surged ahead again in the seventh by scoring on a two-run shot from Millsaps.  Guilford tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff homerun, sending the game to extra innings.

Hannah Tyner then supplied an RBI single to put the Falcons up 11-10, but Guilford used a walkoff double to centerfield to take the 12-11 win, splitting the doubleheader.

Next Games
Pfeiffer will close the regular season on Thursday, April 18 with a road doubleheader at Piedmont International.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Blixt Field at Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.
