Balanced Scoring Leads Pfeiffer Women's Basketball to 86-80 Road Win at William Peace

Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2021) – Five players scored at least 10 points as the Pfeiffer University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to take an 86-80 road win over William Peace University at the Hermann Center on Friday afternoon.

Senior Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) scored a team-high 22 points and had five rebounds in the win.  Fellow senior A'Mya McClain (Hickory, N.C.) also had a good afternoon, as she also had five rebounds to go along with her 19 points.  McClain knocked down a pair of three pointers and was 5-of-10 from the field.  Teammate Shalonda Wilkins (Chesterfield, Va.) hit four three-pointers and also finished 5-of-10 from the field, scoring 16 points while Mya Johnson (Roxboro, N.C.) also finished 5-of-10 from the field while earning a team-best seven rebounds in the win.

Freshman Jalea Peters (Hickory, N.C.) managed a career-high by scoring 10 points to close the double-digit performers for Pfeiffer.

Trailing by six points (70-64) early in the fourth quarter, Pfeiffer put together a 14-1 run to take the 78-71 lead at the 4:38 mark following a pair of Wilkins free throws.

WPU did close the gap to 81-80 with 39 seconds remaining after hitting two free throws.  Sophomore Alexis Murriel (Gastonia, N.C.) pushed the lead back to 82-80 after a free throw with 38 seconds left.  WPU elected to foul the Falcon shooters, with McClain and Murriel each hitting two more free throws each down the stretch to provide the 86-80 win.

The win over the Pacers is the first for Pfeiffer since an 82-66 home win on Jan. 30, 2019, breaking a two-game losing streak to WPU.

The win improves Pfeiffer to 4-3 overall at 4-3 in USA South play while WPU dips to 6-5 overall and 6-5 in conference games.

The Falcons play again on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2:00 p.m. in Merner Gym, taking on William Peace in the series finale.
