How it Happened
Game 1 – N.C. Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the first to take the early 3-0 lead. The Bishops' Kayla Molivas provided an RBI single to score the first run followed by a two-RBI single from Brianna Myers.
NCWC pitcher Beth Braswell held the Pfeiffer bats in check, only allowing a Taylor Parrish double in the first inning. Braswell went on to strike out eight Falcon batters and issued four walks to earn the win in game one.
Game 2 – In game two, NCWC, playing as the home team, took the 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single to centerfield from Meredith Booth. The lead swelled to 2-0 in the third inning when Braswell had an RBI single up the middle.
The Pfeiffer offense came to life in the fourth. Following a leadoff walk by Addison York, senior Makenzie Pennell belted her team leading eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to tie the game at 2-2. Pfeiffer would take the 3-2 lead following a single from Paige Love. During the play an error on the NCWC catcher allowed Hannah Tyner to slide into home for the 3-2 lead.
Pfeiffer carried the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Bishops got a one-out double then a single that put runners on first and third. After a stolen base put runners on second and third, a wild pitch allowed the Bishops to score to tie the game at 3-3.
Pfeiffer then intentionally walked Braswell and she advanced to second, again putting runners on second and third.
Pfeiffer forced a pop up to record the second out of the inning. The Falcons then elected to intentionally walk the bases loaded, but a wild pitch allowed the runner to race home to end the game at 4-3, sending N.C. Wesleyan to the USA South Championship series.
