Misenheimer, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2021) – The Pfeiffer University women's tennis team hosted Guilford College and Salem College in the Pfeiffer Invitational, an individual round-robin event at the Knapp Tennis Center on Sunday, Sept. 26 as part of Homecoming Weekend.
THE BASICS
Pfeiffer dominated play, winning 15 of the 18 matches in which they competed. All told, all eight Pfeiffer players won at least two matches on the day.
In singles play, freshman
Megan Rekieta (Lubbock, Tex.) went 1-1 in No. 1 singles, downing Salem's Haley Gilley, 6-1, 6-1. Rekieta also teamed with
Darby Sherrill (Hiddenite, N.C.) to take both matches at No. 1 doubles, winning over Salem 8-1 and a duo from Guilford by an 11-9 margin.
Sherrill, competing in No. 2 singles, also split her matches, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Salem's McKinley Rice and dropping a match to Guilford's Hannah Pardue, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 3,
Alison Sloop (Rockwell, N.C.) split her matches, winning over Salem's Alyssa Consentino, 6-0, 6-1 and dropping a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Guilford's Jolie Nhouyvansvong. Sloop would team with
Elithe Hudson (Albemarle, N.C.) to take a part of doubles matches at No. 2, winning 8-1 over Salem and 8-5 over Guilford.
Hudson would sweep her singles matches at No. 4, winning over Guilford's Bea Niyibizi, 6-1, 6-0 and Salem's Edi Nixon, 6-1, 6-1.
Brittany Mills (Lillington, N.C.) would also sweep her matches playing at No 5 singles. She won over Salem's Edi Nixon by a 6-1, 6-0 final and would also down Guilford's Nya Reed, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, Mills joined with
Josie Luther (Richfield, N.C.) to win their sole match at No. 3, downing Guilford, 8-3. At the other doubles match at No. 3,
Taylor Brashears (Seattle, Wash.) and
Delaney Geygan also downed Guilford, 8-5.
Luther and Brashers would also win a match each at No. 6 singles, with Luther winning over Guilford's
Alys Parker, 6-0, 6-1 while Brashers downed Parker by a 6-4, 6-4 final.
Next Up
The Falcons will return to play on Sunday, Oct. 10 with a pair of nonconference matches. Pfeiffer will travel to take on Brevard at 10:00 a.m. and will follow that with a 2:00 p.m. tilt with Mars Hill, also to be played at Brevard.
