Methodist Downs Pfeiffer Women, 70-67
Fayetteville, N.C. - (Jan. 23, 2022) – Visiting Pfeiffer University dropped a close 70-67 USA South women's basketball game at Methodist University on Sunday afternoon.
The game, which was nip=and-tuck the entire way, came down to the final stages. Pfeiffer claimed the 62-60 lead after a
Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) layup at the 2:42 mark. Methodist would tie it with a basket at 2:30 by Aniyah Tate and would then claim the 64-62 lead on a Zykeria Jenkins jump shot at 1:51.
Pfeiffer senior
Mya Johnson (Roxboro, N.C.) drilled a three-pointer to regain the lead for Pfeiffer at 65-64. After a Methodist score made it 66-65, Johnson was able to draw a foul and then hit the two free throws to put the Falcons up 67-66 with 1:16 to play.
A miss by Methodist was rebounded by Bentley, who was able to draw a foul with 48 seconds left. Bentley would miss both free throws and following the rebound, Methodist called timeout with 39 seconds left.
The Monarchs would convert a basket from Aneesa Irizarry to make it 68-67 with 25 seconds left. After a Pfeiffer timeout, the Falcons would miss a jumper and were forced to foul, sending Irizarry back to the line, where she made both attempts to put Methodist up 70-67 with eight seconds to play.
Pfeiffer would not be able to get the potential game-tying shot, as a Falcon turnover would seal the 70-67 win for the Monarchs.
Johnson finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Pfeiffer, claiming a double-double, her first of the season. Bentley was the other Falcon player in double-digits, finishing with 12 points while hauling in six rebounds.
Methodist got a game-high 25 points from Irizarry while teammate Aniya Tate finished with 14 points.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 2-7 in USA South play and 6-11 overall while Methodist improves to 6-3 in league play and 8-7 overall.
Pfeiffer will return home to Merner Gym on Tuesday night, Jan. 25 to take on William Peace University in a USA South contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
