Pfeiffer Men's Tennis Beats Southern Virginia to Advance to USA South Championship Match
Rocky Mount, N.C. (April 27, 2023) – The third-seeded Pfeiffer University men's tennis team avenged their regular season loss to Southern Virginia by downing the Knights 5-4 in the semifinals of the USA South Men's Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the N.C. Wesleyan Indoor Tennis Complex.

THE BASICS
Losers to SVU less that a week ago, the Falcons were able to take control of the match by winning two doubles points.Â
Andres Valdez-Arze and
Mateo Sonaglia earned the first win of the day for Pfeiffer at the No. 3 doubles match, as they downed their SVU opponents by an 8-3 final. The No. 2 team of
Benedikt Pfeiffer and
Aleix Garrido won their match 8-4 to give the Falcons to 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
SVU tied the match at 2-2 by winning at the No. 4 singles match, as Spencer Knight won over Sonaglia by a 6-1, 6-3 count.
Pfeiffer regained the lead at No. 2 when
Benedikt Pfeiffer won 6-1, 6-1 over Marlow Perez-Urnutia. SVU then took the No. 1 match, with Dias Marcos downing
Dylan Masters 6-2, 6-2.
SVU then took the 4-3 lead when Ethan Campbell bested
Michael Haranczyk at No. 3 by a 6-3, 6-4 score.
In the final two matches of the day, Pfeiffer's
Aleix Garrido tied the score at 4-4 with a hard fought 7-5, 6-1 win over SVU's Adam Kelly.
In the deciding match at No. 4, Pfeiffer freshman
Bogdan Stan took a 6-3, 7-5 decision to claim the 5-4 team win, advancing Pfeiffer to the USA South title match for the first time.
BACK ON COURT
The Falcons will look to dethrone the 13-time defending USA South Champion N.C. Wesleyan University on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the N.C. Wesleyan Indoor Tennis Complex.
