Pfeiffer Softball Rolls Past Oberlin in DH Sweep

GAME 1
No. 20 Pfeiffer def. Oberlin, 10-1

MISENHEIMER, N.C. (March 8, 2024) -- The No. 20 Pfeiffer University softball team rolled over visiting Oberlin College in a pair of five-inning, 10-1 wins on Saturday at an overcast Jack Ingram Field.

Senior pitcher Kali Morton (5-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Pfeiffer (13-0). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing two walks and striking out two. Junior Emma Bullin also made an impact in the circle for the Falcons, starting the ballgame and throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Emma Chopko went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and a walk to lead Pfeiffer. Fellow junior Gracie Griffin furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Alyssa Broaddus also chipped in for Pfeiffer, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Pfeiffer got an RBI single from Bullin, scoring Chopko from third base.

The Falcons then held the Yeomen scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Pfeiffer offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Chopko and a two-run double from Broaddus, which brought the Falcons lead to 7-0.

Pfeiffer kept Oberlin scoreless before building their lead to 9-0 the following inning. The Falcons scored twice, with one run coming across on Griffin's single.

The Yeomen fought back, closing the gap to 9-1 until Pfeiffer added some insurance in the fifth. Griffin crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Falcons, bringing the Pfeiffer advantage to 10-1. The score remained 10-1 for the rest of the game, as the Falcons coasted to the win.

In game two Pfeiffer took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 10-1 win.

Junior Kenzi Lyall (7-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Pfeiffer (14-0). The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing one walk and striking out three. Junior Emma Bullin also made an impact in the circle for the Falcons, starting the ballgame and throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

Sophomore Charly Cooper led the way offensively for the Falcons, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with three RBI. Freshman Emily Dickerson put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Gracie Griffin also contributed, going 2-for-3 for Pfeiffer with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Pfeiffer's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Cooper.

The Falcons then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Yeomen cut it to 5-1. The Pfeiffer offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run walk off the bat of senior Ellie McHone, which brought the Falcons lead to 9-1.

Pfeiffer kept Oberlin without a run before building their lead to 10-1 the following inning. The Falcons notched a run on Dickerson's one-out RBI double. The score remained 10-1 for the rest of the game, as Pfeiffer coasted to the win.
