Pfeiffer Splits With Meredith, Wins USA South Title

GAME 1
Meredith def. No. 11 Pfeiffer, 2-1 (9 innings)

MISENHEIMER, N.C. (April 24) - Visiting Meredith College held the Pfeiffer bats in check and outlasted the Falcons 2-1 in a nine-inning thriller at Jack Ingram Field.

Neither team was able to puish anything across through the first seven innings, sending the game to extras, and utilizing the international-tie breaker rule.

Meredith struck for two runs in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly that put the Angels ahead 1-0.  An RBI single would push their lead to 2-0.

Pfeiffer responded in the ninth when junior Gracie Griffin laced a double down the right field line that scored Emma Bullin.

After Emma Chopko earned a walk to put runners on the corners, she stole second to put both runners in scoring position.  A Rileigh Dalton walk would load the bases for the Falcons with one out.

Abby Yarboro then hit into a fielders choice, with the tying run being cut down at home on the force play for the second out.  A strikeout ended the game for Meredith, sending the Angels to the 2-1 extra-inning win.

GAME 2
No. 11 Pfeiffer def. Meredith, 9-1 (5 innings)

In game two, it was a tough outung for Meredith pitchers, as the No. 11 Pfeiffer Falcons scored nine runs en route to a 9-1 win over the Angels, clinching the USA South regular season title and the No;. 1 seed and hosting rights for the upcoming USA South Tournament.

Senior Kali Morton (17-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (36-2, 14-2). The right-hander went 3.2 shutout innings, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out five.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by junior Emma Bullin, who went 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Junior Alyssa Broaddus put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Abbie Yarboro also contributed for Pfeiffer, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Falcons first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Pfeiffer scored twice, with one run coming across on junior Jaci Cook's single.

The Falcons then held the Angels scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Broaddus' run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Pfeiffer scored twice, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Falcons.

Pfeiffer kept Meredith scoreless before expanding their lead to 9-1 the following inning. The Falcons bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run error off the bat of Bullin. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as Pfeiffer coasted to the win.
