Pfeiffer Comes up Short in 6-4 Setback at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --The No. 13 Pfeiffer Falcons put together a valiant performance on Saturday, but ultimately came up short, falling to the No. 3 Christopher Newport Captains by the score of 6-4 in the NCAA Division III Regional at a rain soaked Captains Park.

Senior Kali Morton (25-2) got the ball to start for Pfeiffer (45-4) and took the loss.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by junior Alyssa Broaddus, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Junior Abbie Yarboro furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Charly Cooper also chipped in for Pfeiffer, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board.

After the Captains rallied to tie the ballgame at three, the Falcons came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Pfeiffer scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Yarboro, which brought the Falcons lead to 4-3. The Falcons were unable to hold the lead, as Christopher Newport scored three times over the remaining four innings to grab the 6-4 win.

GAME NOTES

» Pfeiffer's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed three runs across.
» Pfeiffer went 2-for-6 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» Pfeiffer pitchers faced 33 Christopher Newport hitters in the game, allowing one ground balls and 13 fly balls while striking out four.
» The Falcons drew five walks from Christopher Newport pitching.
» Broaddus led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double.
» Christopher Newport was led offensively by Delaney Nuckols, who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
» Junior Kate Alger led the Captains pitching staff, throwing seven innings of four-run ball.

Pfeiffer's Emma Chopko, Charly Cooper and Kenzi Lyall were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances in Pfeiffer's four games.

With the loss, Pfeiffer completes the season with a 45-4 oveall mark and returned the best season thus far in the Falcons' Division III era.
