BUENA VISTA, Va. (Jan. 17, 2026) — Pfeiffer University pushed unbeaten USA South leader Southern Virginia to the final seconds Saturday afternoon but came up just short in a 67–65 loss at Knight Arena.
Pfeiffer (9–6, 7–2 USA South) led 65–63 with under a minute to play after
Lettie Michael buried her third three-pointer of the fourth quarter. But Southern Virginia's Abigail Snyder answered with a jumper in the lane with six seconds left, tying the game before adding the decisive basket moments later as the Knights (11–4, 9–0) escaped with the win.
Senior
Miya Horton led Pfeiffer with 14 points, scoring repeatedly in transition and attacking the paint.
Ava Hairston added 12 points and three steals, and Michael finished with 11 points—nine of them from beyond the arc.
Kaileigh Gunter provided nine points while the Falcons' defense forced 26 turnovers, turning them into 23 points on the other end
Pfeiffer trailed 33–32 at halftime but surged ahead in the third quarter behind Horton's driving layups and back-to-back threes from
Janiya Byrd and Hairston. The Falcons built their largest lead at 59–54 early in the fourth before Southern Virginia's size and free-throw shooting shifted momentum. The Knights outrebounded Pfeiffer 35–27 and hit 14 of 16 at the line, including two late makes from Aysia Foster that helped set up the closing sequence
Foster finished with a game-high 18 points for Southern Virginia, while Snyder added 16 and Samantha Smith scored 14. Center Anna Kimball posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Pfeiffer had a final possession with three seconds remaining after a timeout but could not get off a clean look as the Knights held on to remain unbeaten in league play.
The Falcons will return to Merner Gym on Tuesday, Jan. 20 with a 5:00 p.m. USA South clash with Brevard College. The game is the first of a USA South doubleheader with the Pfeiffer men's team.
