DANVILLE, Va. — Pfeiffer opened its 2026 women's soccer season in dominant fashion Tuesday night, rolling to a 5-0 road victory over Averett at Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The win is the largest in a season-opener in Pfeiffer's Division III era and is also the most goals scored in a season-opening win since an 11-0 win over Brooklyn in 2017. The 5-0 mark also duplicates a 5-0 win over Methodist in the 1998 season opener.
The Falcons (1-0) controlled play from the opening whistle, outshooting the Cougars 35-2 and holding Averett to just one shot on goal.
Khamani Spencer got the scoring started in the 14th minute, converting a pass from
Quinn Branca for the season's first goal. Just over five minutes later,
Lily Bido doubled the lead with an unassisted strike to make it 2-0.
Pfeiffer added another goal just before halftime when
Sabrina McNeill scored off an assist from Spencer in the 45th minute, giving the Falcons a 3-0 advantage at the break.
The Falcons continued to pour on the pressure in the second half.
Macy Allred extended the lead to 4-0 by scoring her first career goal in the 53rd minute after a flurry of chances around the Averett goal.
Freshman reserve
Kendall Fortson capped the scoring in the 82nd minute with her first career score, finishing a setup from
Austyn Grace Wolfe.
Five different players scored for Pfeiffer, while Spencer added an assist to finish with a team-high three points.
Branca and Wolfe also recorded assists.
In goal, freshman
Jerusalen Gonzalez needed just one save to earn the shutout as the Falcons' defense limited Averett's opportunities throughout the match.
Despite the lopsided score, Averett goalkeeper Krista Hinebaugh kept the game from becoming more one-sided with 12 saves before leaving late in the match. The Cougars finished with 13 total saves.
Pfeiffer will look ahead to Saturday, Sept. 4 when they travel to Randolph College for a 5:00 p.m. match with the WildCats.
