MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Sophomore Nathan Regis recorded his first career hat trick and tallied a career-high six points as the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (11-4) beat North Georgia (3-10-1) 5-2 for their 10th win in their last 11 matches. Regis pushed his season totals to 13 goals and 34 points, both good for first in the conference and near the top of Division II.
Pfeiffer now sits only two victories shy of tying the school record (13) for most wins in a season, which has been achieved five times, most recently in 2009.
Regis struck early and often in the matchup, recording his first score just 6:21 into the match. Chandler Ligas sent a free kick into the box that Regis headed past the keeper, giving Pfeiffer the early advantage. The sophomore would capitalize on a Nighthawk mistake for his second of the afternoon. North Gerogia's goalkeeper Victor Ohlin was given a goal kick in the 18th minute but Ohlin's attempt ended up at the feet of Regis who sent it into the open net to put the Falcons up 2-0. Some great passing put Pfeiffer up 3-0 as Roberto Soares fed Paco Cortez who then found Mateo Garces-Yepes for an easy score in the 34th minute. With the half nearing a close, North Georgia took advantage of a free kick as Daniel Bowlt found Eddie Hurst to cut the advantage to 3-1.
Cortez notched his third goal of the season in the 57th minute as Jaime Siaj sent a cross to Cortez in the box for the 4-1 lead. North Georgia responded 2:06 later as Hurst added his second of the match, cutting into the Pfeiffer lead. However, Regis cemented the victory with his final goal in the 63th minute. Ligas' throw in found Regis whose header completed the hat trick and secured the win.
"I thought we played very well in the first half," said Head Coach Bob Reasso. "We scored five goals in the match but have to defend a little better. I'm proud of the guys' effort."
For the match, Pfeiffer held a 21-14 advantage in shots and a 4-2 lead in corner kicks. Nicolas Dulac recorded his 11th win in net as the sophomore has played every minute for the Falcons.ÂÂ
The Falcons return to action on Saturday evening as they travel to Emmanuel for a 7 p.m. match.
