MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Roberto Soares scored 5:20 into overtime to lead the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (6-3, 3-1 CC) over Erskine (4-4-1, 2-1-1) in a crucial Conference Carolinas battle on Saturday. Soares broke the scoreless draw in the 96th minute to lead Pfeiffer to the victory on Homecoming.
Soares was set up on the game-winner by sophomore Nathan Regis who lofted a pass into the box that Soares gathered and sent past the goalkeeper as the victory celebration ensued. The victory pushed Pfeiffer's win streak to five games and extended Regis' personal streak to seven straight matches with at least one point.
"I'm very proud of our guys," said Head Coach Bob Reasso. "We beat a very good Erskine team today. We didn't play poorly but didn't play to our up to our abilities but at the end of the day we won the ballgame."
Neither team was able to break through in regulation, though each side had opportunities. Late in the second half, Erskine's Luke Boyce took control of a blocked shot and missed an open net as his shot sailed wide in the 82nd minute. Pfeiffer took advantage and raced down the field, generating a golden opportunity of their own. However, Regis' shot beat the keeper but hit off the post and the game remained even.
Nicolas Dulac made a save on Andrew Settlemire's shot in the 94th minute, leading to a break out for the Falcons. A long pass was sent to Regis, whose pass found the right foot of Soares for the winner.
For the match, Erskine held a 17-13 advantage in shots as the Falcons led in the corner kick category, 9-5. Dulac made five saves in the win, improving to 6-3 on the season.
Fiore Costa made one save in net for the Flying Fleet.ÂÂ
