MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Nathan Regis scored his 16th goal of the season to lead the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (15-4) to a 2-0 victory over Mount Olive (5-11-3) in the Quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. With today's result, two more school records were broken.
With the shutout, Pfeiffer topped the school record of clean sheets in a season with their ninth of the year. Additionally, Pfeiffer's Nicolas Dulac recorded his 14 win in net for the Falcons, also the best in program history. Dulac evened the mark of Mike Sherwood in shutouts for a single season with eight, a record that has stood since 1979.
Pfeiffer scored twice in a 4:28 stretch late in the first half to seal the victory. Regis broke the scoreless draw in the 37th minute off an assist from Roberto Soares. A long ball was played ahead to Soares who redirected it to Regis. The sophomore controlled the ball and put a tremendous move on the keeper to score the eventual game-winner. Moments later, Regis flicked a throw in to Martim Galvao in the middle of the box who fired his shot in the top left corner of the net for his seventh score of the season. The first half came to a close with Pfeiffer holding a 12-2 advantage in shots.
Play slowed considerably in the second half as a total of 26 fouls and four yellow cards were handed out. Mateo Garces-Yepes had a chance to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead but his shot deflected off the crossbar and was cleared by the Trojans defense. With 10:10 to play in the match, Pfeiffer was called for a foul in the box, giving the guests a penalty kick. As Kevin Williams Lopez fired his shot, Dulac made a diving save to his right to preserve the shutout and tie him atop the record books.
"You have to credit Mount Olive, Godfrey is a good coach and they played hard," said Head Coach Bob Reasso. "I thought we were okay in the first half but were dreadful in the second half. I don't think we passed the ball enough, I don't think we moved well enough. At the end of the day it's a win and we get a chance to continue playing, so we're quite pleased with that."
For the match, Pfeiffer held a 19-8 advantage in shots as each team took four corner kicks. Jared Miller made three saves and allowed both goals in the first half before giving way to Nick Bernsdorf for the final 45 minutes.
With the win, Pfeiffer advances to the semifinal of the Conference Carolinas Tournament for the second consecutive season. The Falcons will take on the winner of the Barton vs. Erskine contest and the semifinal will be played on the campus of Limestone. However, if the Saints lose their opening round match, Pfeiffer will host the semifinals and finals at NE Lefko Field.
