SALISBURY, N.C. - In a match that was shortened due to weather, the Pfeiffer women's tennis team (1-0) won its season opener over local rival Catawba by a final of 6-1. Dating back to the start of last season, the Falcons have won 20 of their last 22 matches.
Pfeiffer swept through doubles competition, taking all three decisions. In the number one slot, the team of Olivia Nelms and Hannah Watson claimed an 8-3 victory. The second doubles team consisting of Valeria Mendoza and Taylor Lindsay won 8-5 and the third team of Mylene Petitpas and Mara Hofstetter took home an 8-6 win.
With a sizeable lead, Pfeiffer went into singles play needing just two individual wins to earn the team victory. Lindsay dominated second singles, winning by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Mendoza took care of third singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win to secure the triumph for Pfeiffer. Petitpas won in fifth singles, while Catawba claimed its lone win in sixth singles before the weather struck, ending the match. Nelms and Watson were each one game away from claiming straight set wins.
The squad returns to action next weekend as they travel to Sumter, SC to compete in the ITA Regionals. ÂÂ
