MISENHEIMER, N.C. - In non-conference action, the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (1-3) dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting USC-Aiken (4-1-1) on Wednesday afternoon at NE Lefko Field. Noel Mais scored twice for the Pacers and Brett Smith recorded the game-winner in the 75th minute.
"Today was a disappointing result," commented Head Coach Bob Reasso following the match. "I thought we played fairly well but we keep making critical mistakes and giving up goals. Aiken is a very good team so we have to give them credit but we made too many mistakes. We need to take a deep look at ourselves and move on from here as we try to get better."
The physical contest featured 30 fouls, 15 for each team, and a couple of yellow cards. Pfeiffer jumped on the board first in the 28th minute. Niko Andrade sent a free kick into the box and sophomore Nathan Regis outleapt the defenders to head in for his fourth score of the season. The Pacers responded with only 2:30 left in the first half as Mais gathered a ball outside of the box and beat the Pfeiffer defense before firing his shot into the back of the net. The half ended with each team taking four shots.
The second half began just as the first started as Mais beat the Pfeiffer defense and easily put his shot past Nicolas Dulac to give USC-Aiken a 2-1 lead. Pfeiffer was unfazed as freshman Jaime Siaj fired a shot from 25 yards out just into the top left corner of the goal to even the score at two. The back-and-forth match continued until Andre Simmond took the Pacers corner kick and found Smith at the far post who headed it in for the winner. A few minutes later, the Falcons had a golden opportunity to score as Smith was called for a hand ball in the box, giving Pfeiffer a penalty kick. Regis, who had converted on all five of his penalty kick opportunities in his career, fired his shot past the keeper but off the post as the golden opportunity slipped by. Pfeiffer was unable to muster another goal in the game's final moments as the Pacers escaped with the victory.
Dulac fell to 1-3 on the season as the sophomore made two saves on the afternoon. Brandon Jarosz made three stops in the winning effort.
Each team fired 11 shots in the match with USC-Aiken holding a 12-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Conference Carolinas newcomer Southern Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
