NEWBERRY, SC - Playing against a team that just tied the No. 25 squad in the country, the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (3-3) throttled Newberry (2-3-1) on Wednesday afternoon. Jaime Siaj recorded five points (2 g, 1 a) in the first half and Nathan Regis finished with two scores en route to a 6-0 blowout on the road against the Wolves.
"It was a total team effort from the opening whistle," commented Head Coach Bob Reasso following the game. "Jaime, Nathan, and Martim (Galvao) were exceptional in the attacking third today. It was also nice to get our second straight clean sheet defensively."
Today's match marked the third time this season, and the sixth time in his career, that Regis has recorded a multi-goal effort. The sophomore has been held off the scoreboard in only one match this season and is first in the conference in goals scored (8) and points (18).
Siaj's strong performance also moved him to the top of the conference leaderboard. The freshman's 13 points pull him into a tie for second place in the league.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Niko Andrade lofted a corner kick into the box that the Wolves put into the back of the net for an own goal. Siaj scored two goals in 5:57 and then assisted on Regis' score in the 34th minute. On his first goal, Siaj took a free kick from 23 yards out and bent it around the wall just inside of the far post. At the 26:22 mark, Siaj controlled a rebound and tucked it into the open net. Regis scored with 11:17 left in the first half to give the Falcons a commanding 4-0 lead.
The second half began much like the first ended as Regis found the back of the net off an assist from Marim Galvao. The final score of the game came off the right leg of Nick Janes as his one-time shot beat the keeper in the 86th minute.
Pfeiffer's offensive attack was efficient as the Falcons put 10 of their 11 shots on goal.
Nicolas Dulac made four saves in goal to record his fifth career shutout and his 12th career victory. Pfeiffer's defense has not allowed a goal in 195 consecutive minutes.
The Wolves played to a 2-2 draw against No. 25 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
The win sets up a big conference matchup with Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C. this Saturday at 5 p.m.
"We have a great respect for them and are looking forward to the challenge they present," said Reasso.ÂÂ
Pfeiffer fell to Lees-McRae 2-0 at home in the regular season a year ago, but rebounded to knock the Bobcats out of the Conference Tournament with a 3-2 victory.
