MILLERSVILLE, PA - The Pfeiffer men's soccer team (1-0) traveled to No. 20 Millersville and came away with a hard fought 4-3 victory on Friday evening. The win over a nationally ranked opponent was Pfeiffer's first since defeating No. 1 Lees-McRae on Oct. 31, 2009.
Nathan Regis scored twice as Pfeiffer held off a furious rally in the closing moments. The final six minutes of the match saw three goals scored but the Falcons held on for the impressive victory.
"It was a great performance from our guys," said Head Coach Bob Reasso. "I thought we controlled the game with a lot of possession. Millersville is a very good team and you have to give them credit for fighting until the end but this was a great win for us on the road. We had solid performances all around the field and it was a tremendous night for our guys."ÂÂ
Pfeiffer struck quickly in the 18th minute as Roberto Soares scored his first career goal after a turnover in the 18-yard box led to an easy shot for the sophomore. 1:29 later, Soares was instrumental in the Falcons second score. His shot on goal was saved by the Millersville keeper, but teammate Jaime Siaj collected the rebound and found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. That lead would stand for the rest of the half.
Five-and-a-half minutes into the second half, Millersville was whistled for a foul that resulted in a penalty kick. Sophomore Nathan Regis registered his 11th career goal in only his 18th career match to put Pfeiffer ahead by three. The Marauders would not go away easily as Ahmed Qaisi scored at the 67:17 mark. With 84:17 on the clock, Millersville scored in the chaotic final stretch to cut the lead to 3-2. Just under two minutes later, Regis connected on his second goal after a costly Marauder turnover in their own end. 41 seconds later, Millersville would again cut the lead to one score as Zach Brier answered with a header but only 16 seconds remained in the contest.
The win was Pfeiffer's first win in a season opener since the 2009 season.
Nicolas Dulac recorded six saves in net to secure the win. Each team fired 20 shots and Pfeiffer held a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday at noon as they travel to Westchester for another tough non-conference match.
