MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The No. 1 Pfeiffer men's soccer team (20-0) captured its second consecutive Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship as the Falcons defeated No. 2 seed Limestone (15-4) by a final score of 3-0. Pfeiffer never trailed in the 2015 CC Tournament as Nathan Regis went on to earn tournament MVP honors.
The game was scoreless until the 26th minute when Juan Sanchez sent a shot from 25 yards out that looked to be saved by the Saints keeper. However, the ball deflected off Tom Godfrey's hands and over the goal line for Sanchez's third goal of the season. 3:26 later, Roberto Soares' shot was saved by Godfrey but Regis cleaned it up for his 25th strike of the year. The half would end with Pfeiffer holding a 13-10 advantage in shots.
Limestone continued to battle despite being banged up. Leading scorer Gui Machado was unable to play the majority of the contest and second leading scorer Harry Cooksley didn't see a minute for the Saints in the crucial matchup. However, Limestone had a great chance to cut the lead in half in the 67th minute but Tomas Correa stopped a scoring chance from Jorge Salvat. The Falcons were able to secure the victory when Mateo Garces Yepes picked a perfect time for his first goal of the season with the assist going to Santi Moar.
Pfeiffer held the Saints to five second half shots and took a 23-15 advantage on the game. Tomas Correa made five stops to improve to 11-0 on the campaign. Additionally, the clean sheet was Pfeiffer's 11th on the season, tying last year's record.
Galvao, Cristobal Allendes, Juan Sanchez and Moar were all named to the 2015 Conference Carolinas All-Tournament team following the match.
"I want to give credit to a very tough and brave Limestone team," said Coach Bob Reasso following the game. "They fought hard and gave us a great game. Our guys have been phenomenal all year. They are great kids to train and great kids to coach. Most importantly, we are thankful for Pfeiffer. Our fans made it an electric environment. It was a great day."
Pfeiffer will find out its 2015 NCAA Tournament draw tomorrow night at 6 p.m. on the NCAA Selection Show.
