FLORENCE, SC - The Pfeiffer baseball team (2-1) split its two games on the second day of the Carolinas Hospital Systems Classic hosted by Francis Marion. In the opener, the Falcons fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 3-1, but rebounded to top the host Patriots 3-2.
In the opener, Lenoir-Rhyne (2-0) scored twice in the bottom of the second and never looked back. The Bears got to Pfeiffer's starting pitcher Drew Wilson as Marcus Shoemaker had a bunt single that scored a run and Dylan Anseaume added an RBI base hit. Lenoir-Rhyne tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fourth as Shoemaker knocked in his second run. Pfeiffer was able to cut the lead to two in the top of the ninth as Cody McKenzie scored on an error. The Falcons had the tying run on base but grounded out to end the game.
Starting pitcher Keith Little was the story in game two. Little pitched five innings and allowed no hits, while striking out eight batters. Little left the game with a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from McKenzie in the bottom of the fifth, but wouldn't receive a decision. Francis Marion (1-2) would score twice in the top of the sixth to claim a 2-1 lead. Pfeiffer answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI double by Jon Elwood and a RBI hit by Cole McGraw.
Pfeiffer allowed just two hits in the game. Hunter Jobe got the win in relief and Kyle Hackney earned the save. Ryan Manore dropped to 0-2 for the Patriots.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Forest City, NC to take on Brevard at 5 p.m.
