MISENHEIMER, NC- The Pfeiffer women's lacrosse team (7-3, 5-0 CC) used a huge second half to pick up a close 12-10 win over Belmont Abbey (6-5, 2-2) on Pfeiffer's senior day. The Falcons were led by five Cheyenne Green goals, including three scores in the second half.
Pfeiffer struck first when Gracie Herbert found Kristi Korn for a goal just two and a half minutes into the game. However, Belmont Abbey surged ahead by scoring six of the next eight goals in the contest. With Pfeiffer trailing 6-3, the Falcons cut into the deficit with a goal by Herbert to close out the first half scoring as the Crusaders took a two goal lead into intermission. Green scored two of her five goals in the first stanza both of them coming as free position attempts.
The Falcons scored back-to-back goals to start the second half, scored by McKenzie Rolland and Green tying the game at six. Another Herbert goal assisted by Haley Gourdie gave the Falcons an 8-7 lead. One minute later, Belmont Abbey tied it right back up when Katelin Glass scored an unassisted goal. Jacqueline Kennedy scored the go-ahead goal and gave the Falcons the lead for good with 7:18 left in the game. Pfeiffer seemed to have the game in control leading 11-8 with 2:58 left. However, the Crusaders made a furious comeback scoring two goals in 45 seconds to cut the Pfeiffer lead to 11-10. Green would come up huge again, scoring an insurance goal with 52 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Herbert racked up five points scoring three goals and dishing out two assists for Pfeiffer and Kennedy added two goals and an assist.
Katery Connery and Glass were the main contributors for Belmont Abbey. Connery scored four goals and Glass added three.
Pfeiffer committed just 12 turnovers on the afternoon, compared to 22 by the visitors. Pfeiffer held a 28-22 advantage in shots and a 27-24 lead in ground balls.
Chalane Morrison caused four turnovers and grabbed five ground balls and tammate Ashley West caused two turnovers and also added five ground balls.
Pfeiffer returns home on Tuesday, March 30 for a game with conference rival Mount Olive. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
