Box Score BURLINGTON, NC – In a game that was delayed by rain on three different occasions and suspended once, the Pfeiffer baseball team (28-21) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to North Greenville (28-23) this afternoon. The game was scheduled for 11 a.m. yesterday and was delayed twice due to rain. In the bottom of the fourth, the game was suspended due to continued rain and scheduled to pick up this morning at 11 a.m. However, rain again delayed the start by 75 minutes before the game restarted.
Keith Little was incredible on the mound as the senior tossed four innings yesterday and allowed just two hits and no runs. Coach Dusty Blake brought Little back to pitch today and was rewarded with a tremendous performance. The lefthander tossed 3.1 more innings today and allowed just two more hits but a little bad luck cost him and the Falcons.
With Pfeiffer holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the 8th, Little hit the leadoff hitter for NGU. The next batter popped up a sacrifice bunt that Little dove to catch but it bounced off him and rolled away. Pfeiffer tried to fire to second base to get a force out but the throw went into centerfield allowing runners to move up to second and third with no outs. After getting a pop up for the first out, Little allowed a base hit up the middle by Andrew Locklear to score both runners and put the Crusaders up 2-0.
For the game, Little posted a line of 7.1 innings, four hits, two runs (one earned) to go with eight strikeouts and no walks. Little threw 69 of his 102 pitches for strikes and got 12 outs via the fly ball. Over his last two outings of the year, Little went 14.1 innings and allowed just five hits.
The Falcons headed into the ninth down one but had already two comeback wins in the tournament. Zac Chilton popped a ball down the right field line to start the inning but the second basemen dropped the ball to allow Chilton to reach safely.Damon Smith pinch ran and advanced on Xavier Rodriguez's sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch allowed Smith to advance to third with one out but the Crusader closer Adam Boghosian got Connor Baldy to strike out. After a walk to Jon Elwood put runners on first and third, Cole McGraw – whose RBI single yesterday accounted for Pfeiffer's lone run - worked the count full before swinging and missing on the final pitch of the game.
Hunter Dilworth started for North Greenville and allowed one run in three innings. Matt Laurens was brought in to pitch today and allowed just one hit and no runs in four splendid innings before giving way to John Leopard and Boghosian. Pfeiffer was only able to muster one hit after the game was restarted this afternoon.
The Falcons will now play the winner of Erskine vs. Belmont Abbey tonight at 6 p.m. With a win this evening, Pfeiffer would advance to the Championship game tomorrow where they would face North Greenville who is 3-0 in the double elimination tournament.
