SALISBURY, NC – The Pfeiffer University women's lacrosse team erased several multi-goal deficits in both the first and second halves but could not come away with a win, falling on the road at Catawba with a 12-11 decision in overtime. Junior Molly O'Friel (Chesapeake Beach, MD / Huntingtown HS) finished with four goals with a career-high seven ground balls and a game-best nine draw controls. Sophomore Ally Unkenholz (Ellicott City, MD / Mt. Hebron HS) also scored four times in the effort.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 5-3 (3-0 CC) on the season. Catawba improves to 6-2.
Pfeiffer fell behind early on Tuesday afternoon, trailing 5-1 through the first 17 minutes of action after two goals from Kirstyn Kruse and some help from others. Junior Josie Lent (Vestavia Hills, AL / Vestavia Hills HS) helped the Falcons stop the bleeding with her eighth score of the 2017 campaign, followed by three consecutive goals from Unkenholz to make it 5-5 at the 6:14 mark. The Falcons were victims of yet another Catawba run, again trailing by three before rallying to make it 8-7 in favor of the Indians entering halftime.
Both participants continued to match each other blow for blow in the second frame, with the scoreboard reading 10-10 nearly 24 minutes into the half. Pfeiffer held the lead briefly on one occasion throughout the entire game when O'Friel scored the go-ahead goal to make it 11-10 with 6:04 remaining. Catawba responded 10 seconds later to tie things up before Nicolette Salay connected with the game-winning shot 1:19 into overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Hanlon (Summerfield, NC / - ) made her first collegiate start and played all 61:41 in goal for the Falcons, finishing with a career-high nine saves. She surrendered just two goals in 10 opportunities from free position for the Indians.
Pfeiffer will look to defend its undefeated conference record when it hosts Chowan this Saturday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
