Falcons Win in Ten Innings at Newberry, 10-9

NEWBERRY, S.C. – For the second time this season Pfeiffer (12-15) defeated Newberry (17-13) in extra innings. On Wednesday, the Falcons defeated the Wolves 10-9 in 10 innings as Zach Scudder went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and Kirby Lambert had three hits in five at bats to go along with his 3 RBI.

The Falcons fell behind in the first inning by the score of 4-0 as Falcon starter Brodrick Rierson gave up a single and two triples.

Scudder and Lambert led off the top of the second with a pair of singles. Two batters later, catcher Christian Marciano singled to left to bring in Scudder. Cody McKenzie then grounded out to bring in the second Falcon run of the inning and cut the score to 4-2.

The Falcons went to the bullpen in the second inning with Will Altemueller but he to gave up a run in his first inning of work but again Pfeiffer was able to counter with run of its own with a sacrifice fly from Marciano to bring around Scudder once again.

After Pfeiffer held Newberry with a zero in the third, it commenced with three more runs to take the lead, 6-5. Tanner Mathis and Jordan Eckard singled to start off the Pfeiffer rally and then Scudder singled down the left field line to bring in a run. The next batter, Lambert, doubled to plate two more runs.

After both teams traded runs in the next inning, Pfeiffer added two more runs as Xavier Rodriguez tripled in Marciano from first. McKenzie did the honors in the next at-bat single in the runner from third base.

Newberry was able to tie the score 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth as Derek Olenchuk brought in Danton Hyman.

In the top of the 10th, Eckard reached first on a fielding error by third baseman O'Kevius Conway. Mathis followed Eckard with a double to right center to bring Eckard all the way around to score the game-winning run.

Rodriguez came into pitch the last 2.1 innings to pick up his second win of the season.

Pfeiffer will host Belmont Abbey for a three-game series this weekend; game one will be Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m.
