MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer University men's tennis team (7-10, 2-6 CC) split its weekend contests, losing a tight 5-4 battle to Belmont Abbey on Saturday before earning a dominant, 9-0 victory against nonconference opponent Johnson C. Smith on Sunday to close out its final appearance at the Knapp Tennis Center of the 2017 season strong.
Bjorn Barwinski/Thomas Hubble gave PFU a 1-0 lead after defeating Belmont Abbey's No. 1 doubles team 8-7, but Zachary Blythe/Grant Goldin and Tomas Pardo/Michael Rapsik had notable performances at No. 2 and 3 to give the Crusaders a 2-1 advantage. The Falcons were quick to regrab the lead thanks to singles wins from Axel Woerner (6-1, 6-4), Barwinski (6-3, 6-4), and Hubble (4-6, 6-4, 7-6), however, BAC was able to split with three wins of their own at No. 4-6 positions to slide by with the 5-4 overall match win.
All nine participants for the Falcons were beyond stellar against Johnson C. Smith. As a team, Pfeiffer won 96 total sets compared to the Bulls' 13, surrendering no more than three in a single match.
Pfeiffer will travel to King on Wednesday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
