Falcon Softball Picks Up Road Sweep at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. (Feb. 21, 2024) -- Pfeiffer junior Gracie Griffin collected four hits to help lead the Pfeiffer Falcons over the Averett Cougars 10-6 in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Danville, Va.

Junior Emma Bullin (2-0) picked up the win for Pfeiffer (5-0). The right-hander threw one inning, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out one Cougar batter.

In addition to her four hits, Griffin had a double and three RBI to lead the Falcons. Freshman Emily Dickerson furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and four RBI. Junior Kenzi Lyall also contributed for Pfeiffer, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Pfeiffer got on the board thanks to Griffin's RBI double with one out.

The Falcons then held the Cougars scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Pfeiffer brought home a pair, with one run driven in by junior Abbie Yarboro's single, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Falcons.

Pfeiffer's lead had evaporated by the time the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 4-3 Averett advantage, when the Falcons evened up the game at four.

The Cougars broke the tie and took the lead heading into the fifth inning, when Pfeiffer got back on the scoreboard. The Falcons pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Dickerson that brought home Griffin and junior Jaci Cook, bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of Pfeiffer.

The Falcons kept Averett off the scoreboard before building on their lead to 10-5 the following inning. The Pfeiffer offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Dickerson. Averett put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Falcons still coasted to the 10-6 win.

In game two, four Pfeiffer players recorded at least two hits to help lead the Falcons past the Averett Cougars 5-2, earning the doubleheader sweep.

Junior Kenzi Lyall (3-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Pfeiffer (6-0). The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out five. Junior Emma Bullin also made an impact in the circle for the Falcons, starting the ballgame and throwing 1.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits.

Lyall led the hit barrage for the Falcons, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with an RBI. Junior Jaci Cook furnished a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Pfeiffer's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run groundout off the bat of junior Abbie Yarboro.

The Cougars then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-2 until the Falcons expanded their advantage in the sixth. Pfeiffer scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Lyall, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Falcons. The score remained 5-2 for the rest of the game, as Pfeiffer held on for the win.
