Falcon Softball Wins Two Over Greensboro To Clinch at Least a Tie for USA South Regular Season Title

 No. 12 Pfeiffer def. Greensboro, 1-0


MISENHEIMER, N.C
. -- The Pfeiffer University softball team took both ends of a USA South softball doubleheader over rival Greensboro at a warm Jack INgram Field on Saturday afternoon. 

Senior Kali Morton was dealing on Saturday, tossing a three-hit shutout to lead the No. 12 Pfeiffer Falcons past the Greensboro Pride 1-0.

Morton (16-0) went the distance for Pfeiffer (34-1, 12-1), giving up three hits, walking four and striking out five.

At the plate, the Falcons were paced by freshman Kyler Perdue, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Gracie Griffin put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double.

With the win, Pfeiffer clinches at least a share of the USA South regular season championship.  One more win for Pfeiffer will clinch the outright regular season ttitle.

For Pfeiffer head coach Monte Sherrill, the championship extends his streak to 35 consecutive conference titles, either regular season or tournament titles, over his coaching career at Pfeiffer University, Alexander Central and Central Cabarrus High Schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring for the first and only time in the inning. Pfeiffer got on the board thanks to Perdue's RBI double with one out.

» Morton struck out five Pride hitters.

In game two junior Kenzi Lyall and junior Emma Bullin combined to toss a shutout on Saturday as the No. 12 Pfeiffer Falcons blanked the Greensboro Pride 8-0 in five innings.

Lyall (13-0) started and picked up the win for Pfeiffer (35-1, 13-1), going four shutout innings while giving up one hit, walking none, and striking out three. Bullin was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit.

Offensively, the Falcons were paced by junior Alyssa Broaddus, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double and three RBI. Junior Gracie Griffin furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Bullin also chipped in for Pfeiffer, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Pfeiffer got on the board thanks to Broaddus' RBI double with two outs.

The Falcons then tacked on runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, with their biggest output coming in the third when they scored four times. The big hit in that inning was a one-run single off the bat of freshman Rileigh Dalton.

» Greensboro was led offensively by junior M'Kenzie Davis, who went 1-for-1.
» Freshman Courtney Maddox led the Pride pitching staff, throwing 1.2 innings of one-run ball.

The Falcons will return to Jack Ingram Field on Wednesday, April 24 for their final regular season home USA South doubleheader against Meredith College. One win over Meredith clinches the USA South Regular Season crown.

First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
