WILSON, N.C. - The Barton Bulldogs used three second half goals to hand the Pfeiffer men's soccer team (9-4, 5-2 CC) its first loss since a 3-2 defeat against USC-Aiken on Sept. 17. The Falcons eight match winning streak was broken as Barton (8-4, 4-2) came away with the 3-0 victory in a battle of regionally ranked programs.
Tonight's contest was only the second time the Falcons have been shut out all season as Pfeiffer entered play with the fifth highest scoring offense (3.0 goals/match) in the nation.
"We got beat by a better team tonight," commented Head Coach Bob Reasso following the match. "There was no doubt they were better than us all over the field and they deserve credit for that. We have to lick our wounds and come back ready to play on Saturday."
Barton entered the match ranked 10th in the Southeast region, while the Falcons were ranked fifth. The first half was played to a scoreless draw with the Bulldogs holding an 8-4 advantage in shots.
However, the hosts seized the momentum in the second half and ran with it. In the 58th minute, Alex Blake scored his first collegiate goal as he tapped in a rebound off a save from Nicolas Dulac. In the 70th minute, Niko Andrade was given a yellow card and the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. Dante De Luca calmly beat Dulac to give Barton the 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs tacked on a third score in the 87th minute as Kevin Strassburger fired a shot from the top of the box into the upper right corner for his third goal of the season.
Prior to tonight's battle, Pfeiffer had posted shutouts in four of their last five matches.
Barton held a 20-8 advantage in shots and each team attempted four corner kicks. Jaime Siaj had three of Pfeiffer's eight shots and Nathan Regis was kept without a point for only the third time this season.
Tonight's match was rescheduled from last night as rain forced the postponement of the contest.
Pfeiffer will not have much time to rest as the Falcons return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as they host King on Senior Day.ÂÂ
