WILSON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer women's soccer team (7-5-1, 5-1-1 CC) battled conference foe Barton (6-3-2, 3-3-1) for 110 minutes but neither side was able to break through as the team's played to a scoreless draw on Thursday evening. The tie was Pfeiffer first regular season tie since Oct. 13, 2012 against King, a span of 33 matches.
The Bulldogs held off a furious rally from the Falcons in the final moments of the second overtime as Pfeiffer fired five shots in a 2:45 stretch. Gretchen Dettlinger recorded three shots in the spurt with the final attempt being saved by Carson Moore in the 107th minute.ÂÂ
Pfeiffer dominated the offense in the two overtime periods, outshooting the host Bulldogs 5-1 in that span. Moore was forced to make four saves over the final 20 minutes as the Bulldogs hung on for the draw.
Blakeney Blair made six saves in goal for the Falcons and was untested in the two overtime periods. Blair's final save of the match came in the 87th minute as the freshman stopped a shot from close range that came from the left wing.
Barton's Emily Futral nearly scored in the 12th minute but her shot from the right wing hit off the crossbar in what turned out to be the closest either team would come to scoring on the evening.
Pfeiffer held a 19-15 advantage in shots and had two more shots on goal than the Bulldogs. The Falcons also had the slight advantage in corner kicks, holding a 5-4 edge. Dettlinger led the way with four shots and Jennifer Baity finished with three. The trio of Lane Brooks, Kathryn Smith and Futral combined for 13 of the Bulldogs 15 shots in the contest.
The tie, combined with a Limestone victory, drops Pfeiffer into a tie for second place with the Saints. However, Limestone holds the tiebreaker thanks to a 3-2 victory on Sept. 17 at NE Lefko Field. Converse sits atop the conference standings with a perfect 6-0 mark but must travel to Misenheimer for a match on Oct. 22.
Tonight's match was rescheduled from last night as rain forced the postponement of the contest.
Pfeiffer will not have much time to rest as the Falcons return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. as they host King on Senior Day.ÂÂ
