MISENHEIMER, N.C. - For the third straight year and fourth time in the past five seasons, the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (11-6-2) advanced to the Conference Carolinas Semifinal as they defeated Barton 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Pfeiffer entered as the No. 3 seed and will advance to play the winner of Lees-McRae vs. Limestone in the next round.
Aaliyah Jackson and Macy Rutledge were the goal scorers for the Falcons on today. Jackson's goal was significant as it put the junior into sole possession of 4th place in school history with 29 career goals.
Barton (11-5-2) entered today's match with the stingiest defense in the conference, allowing only nine goals in their 17 matches. However, the Falcons were unfazed as Jackson struck just 106 seconds into the contest. Dana Keeran sent a long pass ahead to Jackson who lofted her shot over the goalkeeper to give Pfeiffer the early advantage. Pfeiffer also ended the half with a flurry as Jennifer Baity fed the ball into the box and Macy Rutledge sent it home with just 1:15 to play.
Barton pulled to within one in the 62nd minute as Grace Fehan found the right foot of Lane Brooks who sent her shot in the bottom right corner of the goal for her eighth strike of the season. The Bulldogs threatened to pull even in the 74th minute but Pfeiffer's Blakeney Blair stood tall in goal. Pfeiffer was whistled for a foul just outside of the box, setting Barton up for a free kick. Blair made a diving save of Brooks' shot and then stopped the rebound by Emily Futral, keeping the Falcons in the lead. Pfeiffer was able to run off the final 16 minutes and advance to the next round.
Barton held a slight 11-9 advantage in shots for the match and each team put five shots on frame. Pfeiffer held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The last time these two teams played, it finished in a 0-0 tie after 120 minutes of play. However, this time, Pfeiffer needed just 1:44 to score.
The time and location of the semifinal round is dependent on this evening's action. The highest remaining seed after the quarterfinal round will host the semifinals and finals. Heading into the tournament, Converse held the No. 1 seed, while Limestone was No. 2. If both teams fall, Pfeiffer will host the remaining contests.
