EVANS, GA - In a game that featured two goals in a 12-second span, a hat trick and a lightning delay, the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (2-1) suffered its first defeat of the season. Clayton St. (3-1) won the battle of 2013 NCAA Tournament teams by a final score of 6-3 thanks to a tremendous effort from Maria Marti bartis.
Marti bartis scored three goals, including one just 1:41 into the match, and fired a game-high five shots on goal to lead her team to victory.
Three different players scored goals for the Falcons in the defeat.
Marti bartis took a pass from Saidhbh Collins in the second minute to give the Lakers the early advantage. However, reigning Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, Brae Buster, struck for her first goal of the season in the 21st minute with the assist being credited to Katie Collins as the Falcons drew even. Clayton St. surged ahead on Marti bartis' second strike of the game, but Pfeiffer wasted little time answering with a goal of their own. Leticia Patino scored just 12 seconds after the Lakers took the lead as the senior tied the match. The Laker offense refused to be slowed as Clayton St. netted two goals in a six minute span to take a 4-2 lead into the half.
Marti bartis completed the hat trick just over two minutes into the second half, staking her team to a 5-2 advantage. At the 52:22 mark, Buster fed sophomore Jennifer Baity who connected on her first of the season to cut the lead to 5-3. With 24 minutes to play, a lightning strike caused a 30-minute delay as the field was cleared. When play resumed, the Lakers Lucy Cunningham scored her second goal of the match to extend the Laker lead to 6-3.
Clayton St. held a commanding 25-9 advantage in shots. Sophomore Kate Halligan made eight saves in goal but dropped to 2-1 on the season.
Pfeiffer has little time to rest as the Falcons host another tough non-conference match. On Sunday at 1 p.m., Pfeiffer will welcome Armstrong St. to NE Lefko Field.
