MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Pfeiffer (3-5-1) women's soccer team knocked off the Catawba Indians (3-5) by the score of 2-1 at N.E. Lefko Field on Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.
In the 40th minute, the Falcons jumped out to a first half lead when a Jennifer Baity free kick connected with Brae Buster. Buster found the ball at her feet in the front of the Indians goal to find the back of the net.
In the 50th minute Catawba answered the Falcon goal as Sophie Waller sent a pass up the middle of the field to her teammate Emily Davis. Davis unloaded the hard shot that deflected off the hands of sophomore Falcon goalkeeper Deidre Gilley to the tie the score 1-1.
The Falcon's answered right back in the 57th minute as Katlyn Stevens set up for a Pfeiffer free kick from the far side of the field. Stevens and the teammates got aligned but as she took the open shot no teammate was needed as the ball was bent beautifully over the Catawba defenders and goalkeeper Angelica Pawlowski to regain the lead 2-1.
The Indians took 13 shots in the second half and their pursuit of a second goal was all for not as Gilley had four saves in the second stanza and played another strong game in goal.
Gilley on the evening saw 18 shots, corralling five saves while gaining her second consecutive win.
For the second straight game, Buster picked up a goal as she continues to move up in Pfeiffer history. The Falcon junior now is tied for 10th all-time with 19 goals with Megan Blevins ('09).
The Falcons return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday September 3rd as they host the North Greenville Crusaders in a Conference Carolinas match-up.
