ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Pfeiffer women's soccer team (8-8) wrapped up its historic first season as a member of NCAA Division III and the USA South Athletic Conference with a tough 2-0 loss at N.C. Wesleyan (4-10-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons wrapped up the inaugural Division III season with a .500 record and will set their sights on a strong 2018 campaign.
The Falcons fell behind early and couldn't recover. The Battling Bishops scored just 1:02 into the match when Hannah Tolson found the back of the net. N.C. Wesleyan netted an insurance goal in the 53rd minute on a strike from Ella Burkhart.
The hosts held an 18-9 advantage in shots and an 8-3 lead in shots on goal.
Today marked the final match for a quartet of seniors. Tori Jackson, Gabrielle Ligas, Maggie Walker and Kat Kelley all competed in their last career game this afternoon.
Traditionally one of the strongest programs at Pfeiffer, the women's soccer team has finished at .500 or better in 12 of the past 14 years. In the two seasons that the Falcons failed to reach a .500 record, they missed by just one win.
Cayci Eaton led Pfeiffer in scoring during her freshman season. Eaton's 12 goals on the year tied her for the seventh most in a single season in program history and her 25 points tied the 10th highest single-season total. Jackson scored a career-high five goals on the year and fellow senior Kelley posted a career-high with seven assists. Seniors Ligas and Walker also each set career-bests in goals scored and points. In goal, Kaley Hyatt's 88 saves is the 10th highest single-season mark.
Pfeiffer was 3-3 at home, 4-4 on the road and 1-1 in neutral contests this season.
