Last-Minute Goal Dooms Pfeiffer in Road Trip to Belmont Abbey

Box Score

Tyler Waddell – Sports Information Graduate Assistant

BELMONT, NC – Belmont Abbey (7-5, 6-1 CC) midfielder Katelin Glass scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal with 1:32 remaining to beat the Pfeiffer women's lacrosse team (7-5, 5-2) by a final score of 8-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Led by Marin Felsoci's hat trick performance – all three goals coming within the first 25 minutes of action – the Crusaders took control early and held a 5-2 advantage over the visiting Falcons at halftime.

After an unassisted goal from Rebecca Luca to begin the second half for a convincing four-goal lead, Pfeiffer was able to find its groove. Two goals from junior Josie Lent (Vestavia Hills, AL / Vestavia Hills HS) and another from freshman Meagan Bourque (Seabrook. TX / Clear Falls HS) narrowed the Falcons' deficit to one at 6-5 at the 16:31 mark.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Belmont Abbey was able to find the back of the net to go back up by two, putting pressure on the Pfeiffer offense to produce with time ticking off the clock. That's when Bourque stepped up to the plate, finding the back of the net with consecutive goals at 6:01 and 5:23 to bring the game to an even tie at 7-apiece.

However, Glass' second goal of the afternoon came with less than two minutes left in regulation and was enough to give the Crusaders their third straight win while handing the Falcons their first losing streak (two games) of the season.

Junior Molly O'Friel (Chesapeake Beach, MD / Huntingtown HS) paced Pfeiffer with two goals and three assists, finishing with a team-high six draw controls. She has now scored in 18 straight appearances – 16 of them being multi-goal performances. Junior goalkeeper Emily James (Marietta, GA / Walton HS) played all 60 minutes in the crease, finishing with eight saves and a game-best seven groundballs.

The Falcons will look to rebound when they host Mount Olive next Wednesday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
