Sophomore Sends Falcons to 1-0 Win on Senior Day

Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 2, 2019) –
Pfeiffer University sophomore Sophia Griffin scored the only goal of the match in the 90th minute to cap a furious last second push for the Falcons, sending Pfeiffer to a 1-0 win over Bob Jones University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Lefko Field.

After battling to a scoreless stalemate, Griffin proved to be the hero, as she launched a shot from about 30 yards out that beat Bob Jones goalkeeper Angelina Martin with just under a minute to play in regulation.

The play was setup after Griffin won the ball from a BJU defender near midfield and passed it to teammate Dayanna Riera (Bronx, N.Y.).  Riera then found Kelsey Esquivel (Charlotte, N.C.) inside the box, but her touch was thwarted by Martin.  The ball then bounced back out and after being challenged by midfielders from both teams, bounced to Griffin.

She then launched a shot that beat Martin to the high and to the right side of the goal.

The goal, Griffin's first of the year, sent the Lefko Field crowd into a frenzy as the Falcons celebrated.

At the kickoff following the goal, Bob Jones was not able to mount any last ditch attempt, as Pfeiffer prevailed 1-0.

The Falcons outshot the Bruins 20-6 on the afternoon including a 12-2 effort in the second half.

Pfeiffer senior goalkeeper Kaley Hyatt (St. Cloud, Fla.) made a pair of saves on the afternoon as the Falcons completed the regular season with a 12-4 record.  Bob Jones falls to 10-8 with the loss.

Prior to the match, Pfeiffer honored seniors Hyatt, Hailey Metzger (Naples, Fla.), and Krystal Jaimes (Asheboro, N.C.).

With the regular season complete, Pfeiffer will wait for the announcement of the ECAC Division III Tournament, which is scheduled to begin with first and second round matchups on Nov. 16-17 with the semifinals and championship to be held on Nov. 23-24.
