MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer women's soccer team (8-5-1, 6-1-1 CC) exploded for four second half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over King (6-7, 3-4) on Senior Day. Four different Falcons recorded a goal in the rematch of last year's Conference Carolinas Quarterfinal, which Pfeiffer won 2-0.
King struck first, 11 minutes in as Catherine Walsh took a cross from Paula Doran and chipped it just over the head of Pfeiffer keeper Blakeney Blair. The ball trickled just over the goal line to give the Tornado the advantage. Neither team would score the rest of the first half but Pfeiffer had the ball in the offensive end the majority of play. The half would end with the Falcons holding a 7-3 advantage in shots but down 1-0 on the scoreboard.ÂÂ
The Falcons evened the score in the 54th minute off a misplay by the Tornado keeper. Macy Rutledge sent her corner kick into the box and Nicole Dagher bobbled the ball before eventually securing it. However, she lost her footing and fell across the goal line, crediting Rutledge with the score. The flood gates opened as Pfeiffer seized the momentum and put the game away with two goals in 57 seconds as the Falcons totaled three scores in 3:02 of play. Pfeiffer's second goal came off the foot of Katlyn Stevens who scored for the third time this season. Moments later, Aaliyah Jackson found herself alone in front of the net and easily beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation. In the 75th minute, Brae Buster netted her fifth of the season as Hannah Hill sent a perfect pass to Buster who did the rest.
Pfeiffer held a 16-7 advantage in shots for the afternoon and had a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Blair made two saves in net to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. Dagher made three stops for the Tornado.
Prior to the match, Pfeiffer held its senior day festivities and honored the contributions of seniors Katie Collins, Hill, Rachael Ramey, Kayla Rodriguez and Kaitlin Sampson. The five seniors have led Pfeiffer to 40 overall wins, a 26-10-7 record in conference play, a 2013 Conference Carolinas Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday afternoon in a crucial matchup with Converse at 2 p.m. as the Valkyries currently sit atop the Conference Carolinas standings with a perfect 6-0 mark.
