MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer women's volleyball (0-15, 0-8 CC) lost a heartbreaker to Emmanuel (9-7, 3-3) in five sets on Saturday afternoon. Freshman McKenzie McDonald set a career-high with 13 kills and Kelly Lancellot also had 13 kills but the Falcons ran out of steam in the fifth set.
Andrea Lopez also set a career-high with 21 digs in the losing effort, besting her previous high of 14 against North Greenville on Sept. 19.
Freshman Shenelle Charlot had 11 kills on the afternoon and the combination of Katie Wilson and Anna Tomkins combined for 47 assists. Haley Denny added 26 digs and McDonald added one solo block and seven assist blocks. The Falcons finished the contest with 15 total blocks, blowing away their previous high of eight.
Unfortunately, Pfeiffer was unable to overcome 42 attack errors and 11 service errors on the evening.
Kelsey Blauser closed out the first set with a big kill to give the Falcons the 25-20 victory, the first such time they won an opening set on the season.
However, Emmanuel responded with an impressive 25-18 win in the second set as Pfeiffer struggled offensively, hitting -.095. The Falcons answered with 11 team kills in the third set, but came out on the short end of a 25-21 decision.
Instead of giving in, Pfeiffer rallied in the fourth set. A combined block from Lancellot and McDonald gave the Falcons the 25-17 win, forcing the decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, Emmanuel scored the first two points and never looked back. The Lions pushed the lead to 5-1, before Pfeiffer rallied for three straight points. Unfortunately, the Falcons wouldn't get any closer as Emmanuel took the set 15-11.
The Falcons return to action on Friday evening as they host Lees-McRae at 7 p.m.
